We are living in a time of unprecedented technological wonder and the alarming consequences of unchecked "growth,” as natural, industrial and economic disasters threaten the patterns of ordinary life.  How can artists respond to and work against despair amid this ongoing economic, environmental, and social fragility? Are we the relief workers of the new collapse?

Lucky Pierre as Lucky Pierre Free University directed the collaborative seminar. Over a period of 10 weeks LPFU facilitators and participants have together developed creative responses to themes of environmental and economic fragility. The concluding event, featured presentations, performances, and gallery works displayed in the Propeller Fund Project Space at Mana Contemporary.  This piece was supported by Live Art Development Agency and Propellor Fund.

Week 1: Select one of the essential questions.  Have it answered (by you, by someone you know, by a stranger, etc).  “Document” the answer in any way you choose.

Week 2: Think about beauty. Make something beautiful without using digital technology. Give it away.

Week 3: Is there still time? Decide. Organize a campaign of persuasion, large or small. Deploy in public space.

Week 4: Summarize the status quo narrative in 140 characters. “Dance” your tweet in 4 distinct movements. By dance we mean a simple gesture, movement or action using your body). Document this “dance” with a video, photograph or drawing.

Week 5: Do not look at/interact with any personal (market-driven) electronic communication device or platform for 24 hours.  This includes all internet, television, Facebook, texting, cell phone.  This also includes Skype, Twitter, Google docs, gaming platform or personal computer of any type.  Sleep for at least 8 hours.  Do not document your experience in any way.

Week 6: Document your disposal of something you once thought was essential.

Week 7: Think about what we’ve read and looked at over the last 7 weeks. Think the epicenter of fault.  Using these resources as a starting point, chart out the major disasters of the last 100 years. Post your disasters on the group site.
