America/n
America/n was presented on Election Day, November 6th 2012, at Defibrillator (Chicago). During polling hours (6:00 am to 7:00 pm), Lucky Pierre and 24 guest presenters discussed the American project as defined by the United States Constitution. We began with the Preamble, "We the people..." and worked our way through to the end—"The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
24 artists, activists and scholars were invited to research, interpret, rewrite or otherwise respond to a pre-selected section of the US Constitution. Each presenter had 20-minutes to report their “findings” in whatever form they chose (discussions / songs / performances / polemics/ lectures). The daylong event was free and open to all.
AMERICA/N (THE BOOK) The piece was completed on Inauguration Day 2013 with the release of America/n (the book). With material collected from all 24 participants, America/n is an artist book, literary journal, and pocket constitution, that captures and responds to the experience of the day.
