Overlay

(2022, installation)  Overlay was a timeline created in collaboration with attorney, activist and educator Joey Mogul. It was exploring on the overlap between Chicago and the world, focusing on the police and the military, and movements for justice that never rest.  The history of state violence and resistance built through collective action can offer a portal for analysis and action toward social transformation.  We ask the viewer to consider who has power, and how does power shift?

This project was our contribution to Remaking the Exceptional, an exhibition that marks 20 years since the opening of the United States' extralegal prison in Guantánamo that  highlights connections between policing and incarceration in Chicago and the human rights violations of the "Global War on Terror."

Created by Michael Thomas, Kevin Kaempf, and Mary Zerkel in collaboration with Joey Mogul.
